The Kukui tree, the tree of enlightenment, was
selected as the central theme for this window because it is a gathering place
for rest and shade. The handmade, transparent glass, relates to the purity of
the spirit: clean, clear, and colorless. The unit crests of the 2nd, 4th, 5th
Marine Divisions and the Fleet Marine Forces, Pacific honor those who trained in
Hawaii and fought so bravely in WWII. The islands shown are the campaigns that
they fought. The unit crests at the bottom of the window and the rigid grid
patterns are in opposition to the flowing, irregular patterns of the Kukui
tree. These opposing images blend and exist in complete harmony, simultaneously
nurturing one another symbolizing the peace and tranquility won through hard
sacrifice.
“ALTAR”
The concept developed for the stained glass
windows, depicts the harmonious relationship the people of the State of Hawaii
and the United States Marine Corps have jointly established throughout
the years. The intent of these images is to illustrate this
relationship graphically with the physical and the natural beauty of Hawaii.
Mokapu Peninsula, with its sweeping views of the Koolau mountain
range, came to be known as a place sacred to the ancient Hawaiians. The altar
window honors the early Hawaiians who witnessed this natural beauty and to those
who now discover, amid this scenic and serene
landscape, the spiritual light of faith, hope, and inspiration.
“FIRE”
The image symbolizes the spirit being tested like
gold in fire. It radiates the intensity of fire and of the volcanoes from which
the islands were formed. The Marine Corps is represented by the Marines on the
right, and by the lone Marine silently honoring those who gave the ultimate
sacrifice. It defines Honor, Commitment, and Courage—those qualities that it
takes to be a Marine.
“WATER”
This design conveys the beauty and majesty of the
waters that surround the Hawaiian Islands. In the spirit of the Naval Forces, it
reveals the power and might of the oceans. With beauty and grace,
these waters also refresh our tired souls. The image of a naval landing craft on
the left and the Sailor, protected by the hands of the Almighty on the right,
remind us of our duty to God and Country.
“THE CHOSIN FEW"
Dedicated to the memory of those Marines, Soldiers,
Sailors, Airmen, and Royal Marine Commandos who fought so bravely and fiercely
at the Chosin (Changjin) Reservoir in North Korea November – December 1950. The
Star over Koto-Ri, shown as the central theme, provided hope and inspiration on
that night when they needed it most.
